How to Become a Bollywood and Television Actor

Follow 7 Steps

Have you ever dreamed of one day becoming a famous Bollywood actor? If so, the first thing you need to realize is that this dream can become a reality if you're willing to But in the time, training, dedication, passion and patience required to make it in Bollywood.

If you've always wondered how to become a film or television actor, then here are ten steps that may not get you the role of a lifetime, but they will help you to treat your acting career as a career and not simply as something you choose to do for fun.

1. Learn How to Act

You must take the time to master your acting craft and continue updating it. Acting is first and foremost a fine performing craft and an absolute perfection is a MUST. If that means sacrificing a lot and lot along the way, so be it. I know that sounds rather harsh, but acting is not a 9-5 job by any  I can't tell you the number of people that come to Bollywood thinking that all they need to do is get some job contact a casting director or a producer like Karan Johar  get "discovered" and then it's nothing but a fantastic dream life. Uh...no! It's bullshit!
Even top Bollywood actors take classes, work with acting and dialogue coaches, they study life experiences, etc. They know full well that even after a lifetime of work and study, they may never reach the peak and become a legend.

2. Be In Mumbai

I hate telling people this, but if you hope to work in film and/or television as an actor, you need to go where the work is. Now, that doesn't necessarily kill your acting career if living in Delhi, Kolkata or any other town. There are opportunities in other metro/A class towns as well After all. But, Mumbai is where most of the casting directors work and live. So, many of the films or TV serials shows that are shot in other cities within India or abroad are still cast in Mumbai. So, even though you don't necessarily need to move here, keep in mind that it is where most of the action is.

3. Be Willing to do What it Takes

A. Be willing to sacrifice

  • Your comfort zone
  • Your earlier lifestyle
  • Interests which could be obstacles in acting career
  • Irrelevant socializing
  • Wasting time etc

B. Unbudgeted-

  • shopping
  • frequenting night clubs and restaurants
  • entertaining friends who can't help you in your career etc

C. Prepared to work 8 to 12 hours a day. Even successful actors have to work hard to maintain and grow career

D. Manage finances.

E. However, don't compromise

  • Your integrity
  • Honesty
  • Self-respect
  • Sex

4. Must be fully Committed

Make a commitment to yourself and work for it

  • There are no bad actors, just actors who aren't willing to "fully commit" themselBBe Nice

Bollywood is all about helping those you know because they might one day be in a position to help you as well. So, you need to remember this great rule -- be nice to everyone. From,  the smallest crew member to casting directors, artist coordinators and their assistants to fellow actors, photographers, gatekeepers at the industry offices(Like receptionists, lift man, security personnel etc)or in another word to whomever you meet in Bollywood and TV industry. Remember, that assistant you treated poorly two years ago might one day become a casting director, film producer, talent agent or whatever. And trust me, they'll remember those who stomped on their toes on their way up the ladder.
Conversely, they'll remember those who were nice the whole way up and they'll be that much more inclined to help them achieve their own goals.

6. Develop Persistence

There is one general rule in Bollywood -- your talent alone may not get you there, but persistence just might. If you are a leecher like a gum which sticks(Chipku), then Mumbai and Bollywood or TV is the town for you. Those who are gritty and willing to give it their all day in and day out will have a much greater chance of success than the top school trained actor who waits around in his apartment for an opportunity to come knocking.
The trick is, you have to get out there. Meet people, persist, be after them and let them know what you are doing. It's absolutely essential to your success.

7. Have Patience

There is NO "overnight success.

Bollywood or TV industry in Mumbai is a strange place. There are actors who have literally been working for decades when all the sudden, they're in a role that gets a bit of attention and suddenly, they're famous.  But the reality is that with 95% of aspiring actors there required is years of hard work and preparation that may lead them to that "sudden discovery."

Patience is not only a virtue in Bollywood, it's an absolute must to keep from going insane with rejections and failures. So develop your patience and you will enjoy the process of rising to stardom that much more even if you never end up getting there.
