Commercials on TV, Video channels and on other advertising sources  and are a great way for you to practice your acting craft. You can work on your “improvisation” acting techniques ie playing a scene without a written script (Improv)  skills, make great money, and make invaluable connections with influential people in the industry. However, due to stiff requirements and competition it can be difficult to get started in commercial ads work.
How you can break into commercial ads work and start promoting commercial products . We took a survey of some of the directors attached to production houses of commercial ads and   asked them the following questions:

1. How can actors can get jobs in commercials/commercial acting?

A clearly defined “look.”

Imagine a 20-year-old with unshaven face actor, a bad fitting dress, facial marks or tattoos,and high heals funny shoes. Now imagine a clean-shaven 50-year-old actor with white hair, expensive dress or suit, and glasses. There may be more roles available for the 20-year-old, but the 50-year-old is going to have a higher success chance due to cultivating a clearly defined “look.

Action: Create a “look” by working on your body, face, dress and etiquette code and then define your “Type”. 


An improv (Improvisation background) natural ability or training.

Many commercials ads may not require actors to speak, but almost all require actors to have the ability to think fast on their feet, entertain, or simply create, in most cases, into something worth watching. Though an improv background is not mandatory, many casting directors certainly look to actors with this improvisation ability for their commercial ad projects.

Action: Learn this acting technique of “Improv”(Improvisation) from your school or better if you have a personal coach

2. Can actors learn auditioning and earn money as well?

Yes. Commercials ads are a great way to practice auditioning, get used to being on set, and make good money.

Action: Identify school, workshops or a personal coach to take a special commercial ad and “improv” training. Learn audition skills. Many commercial auditions are improvisations, and working on these skills will prove invaluable. In addition to training your skills, meet experienced commercial ad actors in auditions who may give you tips, recommendations, or referrals that you may not know.

3. What are the right ways to better chances getting selected in commercial ads? 

1. To figure out the “Type” of actor or character required (age, physical attributes, looks, behavior etc) 
2. Find out what types of roles and what types of commercials they would be best for you. The best way to do that is to watch commercials and find the type of actors that are most similar to the characters in an ad.

1. Find out your type: How do you look, behave (Your attitude)?Think of all of the films and TV shows you’ve seen and start to notice how you would describe all the characters you see in just a few words and where do you fit in. 
2. Make a good portfolio. They should keep ready a "resume cum headshot" (resume to be clipped at the back of the headshot) to be submitted to the production houses/ model coordinators

4. Should actors have excellent acting skills for commercial ads?

May help but not really necessary.

The danger is some actors have a tendency to show off their acting ability when they appear for auditions irrespective of type of an audition resulting into focusing the character rather than the product they are promoting

Remember, in commercial ads you are a medium to sell a product or a concept and not just a character. It's a question of how good are you as a medium rather than an actor. How well you can tell and show a story (product) is more important.

1. In commercial acting, they are buying your special magic and consider your inner self, your essence. Therefore, sometimes you don't even need much acting experience if you have “a look” suitable for their script's character and can light up in front of the camera. 
2. But good acting is still a plus and you can also learn lots of tips watching commercial ads on TV and in other media like video channels

Facebook sign up form

• Go to www.facebook.com. Towards the left side of the screen you will see a "Sign Up" on Screen. On here you will need to enter your information. Notice, it says email. If you do not have an email address yet, you can get a free one off gmail.com or yahoo.com. After you enter your information click "Sign Up"
• After you click sign up they will ask you to verify a few words. Enter the words from the screen in the text box below it and click "sign up" again
• Facebook will then send an email to the email account you entered. You will need to go to this account and open their email. The email will direct you to click on a link to verify that you're real. After you complete this you can login to Facebook with your email address and password that you entered. You can login by going to facebook.com and entering your email and password at the top of the screen.
• Facebook also has the option for you to add all your friends in your email address book that you have. This is an easy way to get a quick contact group. Once this is complete you can edit your profile.
• At the top of your Facebook screen you will see a profile link. Click that to make edits to your profile. You can also click on settings to edit other items like email settings, etc...

Important: 

• Put a good header picture and your best head shot as your profile picture
• Writing properly under "about" is needed for actors and models. You would be required to put a summery and more details at two separate places under "about"

• Openings in this field will simply overwhelm you. With endless options also come cutthroat competition, unpredictable work schedule and stress. Endurance and patience play a very important role in survival and growth in this field.
• As a model, you have to learn on the job as there is no specific training available in this field. There are very few training schools opened by former models in cities like Mumbai and Delhi. These schools train you in grooming, developing personality, makeup tips and help you spruce up your self-confidence.
• Apart from these courses, you need good links in the modelling world to get the right break to get an entry into this glamorous world.
• There is no definite qualification or age limit or any type of course required to take up modelling as a profession. You can start by making a good portfolio and handing it out to various fashion houses or advertising agencies.

Print ads pay according to the number of photographs being printed.

Beware Actors For Bollywood! Don't Get Duped By Crooked Casting Directors- A TRUE STORY

Two days ago, three models and a casting director were having an animated conversation at a Mumbai cafe.
The models, two men and a woman were all ears as the man, in his 30s and casually dressed, held forth about his contacts in the film industry.
He inquired about their portfolios before claiming that he casts for prominent producers of the industry including Karan Johar, Raju Hirani, Vipul Shah and many others. The big names caught the attention of another group sitting on the next table.

One of them was Aashin Shah, Executive Producer to Vipul Shah, a leading Bollywppd producer (Action replay, Nameste London,London Dreams, Singh is Kinng and many more)  for the past seven years.

Aashin told Mirror, “When he mentioned sir’s name, I decided to follow the conversation. He told the other three people that it was he who introduced Vidyut Jamwal to Vipul Shah.  He was dropping big names and because it was a small coffee shop, it was not really hard to overhear the conversation. He was obviously a con man.” 

Meanwhile, one of the models requested him to set up a meeting with production houses and it was then that the man demanded Rs 20,000 from each of them.

Aashin then decided to call the poser’s bluff and he along with one of his friends joined the conversation by posing as aspiring actors.

“My friend told him that he desperately wants to appear in a film, even if it is part of a crowd scene. He told him that he needs a portfolio, which will cost Rs15,000. Then I walked up to the table and told him that I have done a lot of theatre in the past and also assisted Vipul Shah,” recalled Aashin.

The impostor kept a blank face and replied, “I don’t deal with assistants, I deal directly with Vipul.” When the man demanded money from Aashin and his friend, the Executive Producer (Aashim) put out his visiting card on the table!

The move unnerved the man and when Aashin confronted him he tried to run out of the café. But the models chased him down and when caught, he apologised in tears and returned the money he took from them.

After much pleading, the man was let off with a warning. When contacted producer Vipul Shah offered a word of advice, “It is becoming a rampant practice and it is saddening because these men give the industry a bad name. I want all newcomers to be very careful as so many people give away their hard-earned money to these frauds.”
