Don't Cheat Casting Directors | Know Your Type And Apply Bang Right

Which role suits your type as an actor?
Which role suits your type as an actor?

What is Typecasting? Why and How to Know Your Type as an Actor and Apply For Appropriate Auditions

How Casting  Directors Select Actors For Auditions?

Typecasting
Typecasting (acting) In television, film, and theatre, typecasting is the process by which a particular actor becomes identified with a specific character; one or more particular roles; or, characters having the same traits or coming from the same particular social or ethnic groups eg. South Indian, Hariyanavi, Nepali, Bhojpuri, young, old, short, tall, villager, urban executive and so on.
An actor who knows his/her type and apply to meeting a character description always stand a better chance of selection among hundreds who apply randomly without considering a character's description.

How to Know Your Type as an Actor

There are a lot of acting jobs out there in Bollywood and in TV serials, and as an actor trying to get roles as much as possible, you need to spend your time efficiently instead of wasting it on the parts you simply do not fit.

Actors are virtually running their own business in this chaotic Indian Bollywood and TV industry. One of the very first rules of your business is to find your customers. The success of the business will depend on your ability to find a circle of consumers interested in the product (Casting directors, producers who will understand you as an actor with a distinct "Type"- a brand).

For decades, actors have been fighting typecasting, and rightfully so: nobody wants to do the same role the rest of their lives. That’s one of the reasons many of you decide to become actors: it’s the variety of jobs and things you get to do on a regular basis.

An exception to typecasting

However, it’s one thing to go against typecasting when you’re an established name within the industry, and a whole different story when you’re trying to get your feet wet in this huge showbiz pool. When you’re just starting out as an actor, in fact, you DO want to get typecasted and be known for certain things in the film industry.

Finding out your type as an actor has always been overlooked by actors, but this knowledge is extremely helpful in the beginning of your acting career, and here’s why.

Benefits of Typecasting

When you know your actor type:

  • You can market yourself more effectively because you know who’s going to be interested;
  • You will know how to shoot and sell your headshots;
  • You can present yourself more accurately during online submissions;
  • You will know exactly what parts to go for and raise your chance of booking them;
  • You will not waste your and others’ time by auditioning for something you aren’t fit for.

Benefits of figuring out what type of actor you are applying for any market: stage, film, TV, commercials, corporate and anything else.

Knowing your brand as an actor in the beginning of your acting career will not only get you cast more often, but it will also help you in fighting typecasting later in your career (something that almost every working actor has to go through).

Your looks

Understand how to look at your physical appearance objectively and learn everything about yourself; be aware of it. Can you honestly pull off a leading man’s or leading woman’s role, or would you suit better a part of his/her geeky friend?

Roles

Judging from the side, do you see yourself a lot in comedy skits or in serious drama? I know you can do both, but for now, you need to pick. Think about any minor detail and what makes you stand out, what makes you that type of a character.

Your age

This should probably go with figuring out your looks and exterior, but I just want to stress how important this part is. In this industry obsessed with looks and age, knowing what you appear like is vital.

First of all, remember that you are as old as you look. If you’re 30, but you can pull off a teenager – good for you! In the acting business, that is how old you are; it’s not about your legal age. So learn how old you look and go for parts that are asking for that particular playing age.

Your Traits

Your character, charisma, personality, emotions, individuality, temper and anything else that makes you, you. As we have previously talked in Tips for a Successful Audition, it is very important for actors to be themselves and bring their own personality.

Learn what kind of a person are you

  • Are you funny and witty?
  • Are you quirky and awkward?
  • Are you very serious and straight?
  • Are you shy, silent, neurotic, energetic?
  • The list goes on and on. Write your own and start working at it.

Typecasting and Actor 1. Look. 2. Personality and just 3. Type- these three aspects mentioned above are major factors in determining your actor type. That’s what the industry cares most about. But figuring out the answers to those questions is a thousand dollar question.

It’s always easier to start figuring your actor type in the beginning of your career when you’re still fresh.

The Camera

The camera never lies, and therefore you must apply for the right role or you will be revealed as a wrong choice for the role in the camera auditions.

Who can help you to identify your type?

  • Friends
  • Relatives
  • fellow actors
  • Acting classmates
  • Your acting coach
  • However, important is your own sincere assessment of self.  Your actor type could be the complete opposite of what you really are in person, or what you have initially expected it to be. Get enough answers to draw a more concrete conclusion, and embrace your type – whatever it is.

From Middle Class? Practice This Proven "Acting Alone" Technique

The Technique of Learning Acting At Home
The Technique of Learning Acting At Home

Why Not Learn Acting Alone At Home?

Most people consider talking to one’s self to be a symptom of a severe mental problem, but for an actor, the ability to converse while alone is a sign of a strong and vibrant imagination. actors can perform solo exercises to improve their craft. Monologues, imagination exercises, vocal exercises, and the simple act of reading scripts are all effective ways for actors to progress.

Watch Yourself

Film yourself on mobile or webcam.
More and more, it is becoming commonplace for actors to watch the playback of their scenes for directional purposes. So, being comfortable watching yourself on camera and understanding the technicalities of film acting are both important skills that can be practiced.

Film A Monologue

  • Set-up a camera, cell phone, or webcam to capture your performance
  • Prepare as you would for an audition
  • Choose a point in the room to talk to, a chair, a speck on the wall, whatever
  • Picture the other character in the room with you and play to them, observing their reactions as you act
  • Press Record, perform the monologue
  • Watch the playback and observe yourself. What worked? What didn’t?

This exercise will help you become more comfortable on camera and also help with the technical side of film acting. Do your eyes drift? Are you “overacting”? Experiment with your motivations and technique until you find what works for you. This simple and solitary exercise builds comfort and confidence in front of the camera that directly translates to the film set.

Remember that acting is an internal process that leads to an external performance. Do not focus on external results like your facial expressions or posture. Focus on the thoughts that led to them.

Watch Friends And Others

Technically, this exercise is not a solo exercise because it requires other people, but those people do not have to be willing participants. To begin with, The best is watching your friends and Relatives. Watching is an excellent way to hone character building skills by improving your observational skills and imagination.

Be A Spy And Watch Strangers

Go to a public place – coffee shop, mall, park, or anywhere else with foot traffic
Pick a person and observe them. Look at the way they walk, talk, laugh, wear their clothes, etc.
Allow natural questions to arise. What job do they have? Where do they live? What are their dreams and desires?
Answer these questions as honestly as you can, taking into consideration all that you have observed.
Repeat the process over and over for different people around you.
With this exercise, an actor works on their imagination, taking their surface observations and using them to fill in the details that make a person unique. These skills of observation and imagination directly translate to script analysis. The next time you break down a character, your decisions will be more specific – rooted in observation – and the result will be a well-rounded and unique performance. And to think, this was all accomplished by practicing alone.

Acting alone is a powerful way for an actor to strengthen their imagination and build confidence in a risk-free environment. However, acting alone is only worthwhile if it leads to better public performances in the future. Take these exercises and learn from them, but continue to pursue auditions and classes to further your acting career.

Learn Meisner Or Get Your Scene Removed By Film Editor | Why?

An actor scene is removed

An actor scene with Shah Rukh Khan is removed
My scene with Shah Rukh Khan  is removed

I had given a party to celebrate my brief shot with celebrity Shah Rukh Khan. I was my first break. But to my utter shock, this disappeared from the film and I was a laughing stock in the eyes of my parents and friends. When I talked to the director, she didn't comment. I'm shattered. Why this could happen? Mohini Gaikwad

Because You Listened And Reacted Badly On Camera. You Don't Know "Reality Of Doing"

Film Editing And The Film Editor

The actors must know what is a film editing and the role of an editor. For actors, in simple term he\she is the final key factor to decide whether an actors scene should be included in a film or in a TV serial scene or should be removed. The inclusion of an actor scene largely depends on how well he/she has listened and reacted truthfully for the camera, an actor's overall performance which may comprise of different shots and finally whether it is contributing and enhancing the value of the film or not.
There is an amazing acting technique of Sanford Meisner, the legendary acting coach, and a writer. This must be learned by all actors who dream to become a star-Author

(Film editing is a technical part of the post-production process of filmmaking. The term is derived from the traditional process of working with the film which increasingly involves the use of digital technology.
The film editor works with the raw footage, selecting shots and combines them into sequences which create a finished motion picture. Film editing is described as an art or skill, the only art that is unique to cinema, separating filmmaking from other art forms that preceded it, although there are close parallels to the editing process in other art forms such as poetry and novel writing. Film editing is often referred to as the "invisible art" because when it is well-practiced, the viewer can become so engaged that he or she is not aware of the editor's work.
On its most fundamental level, film editing is the art, technique, and practice of assembling shots into a coherent sequence. The job of an editor is not simply to mechanically put pieces of a film together, cut off film slates or edit dialogue scenes. A film editor must creatively work with the layers of images, story, dialogue, music, pacing, as well as most importantly, the actors' performances to effectively suit the camera -source)

Why Was Your Scene Removed?

Unfortunately, because of repeated readings of the script which has co-actors' lines as well and rehearsals, we know what would be the next line and take it as granted and when actually spoken on camera, we don't REALLY listen. This could be a terrible mistake. The scene and our reactions look lifeless and fake which an editor hates. In a big film, he may ruthlessly cut off your piece or as an extreme measure, tell the director or a producer to "pack off this actor". Especially this is 90% true in Indian TV serial in a reaction shot-Author

The Best And Easiest Learning Acting Technique

The Great Natural Way of Acting-Sanford Meisner

Sanford Meisner
Sanford Meisner

You will NEVER be successful till you learn Meisner's Acting Technqiue

The best experience in an actor's life is the realization that he/she is not the character which seems to them or others, but simply the exposing the different colors of his/her life itself. The height of "experience" in acting is the reverse; that "I AM the characters I play in front of the camera!  Every moment is new. The mind creates in a natural way and instantly in response to the requirements of the situation. Every moment a new character is born, live a little and die.
This was not always the case. A child is always is very imaginative, always in a fantasy. But the harsh competition of human, always acutely painful and changes a kid.
The years at acting schools do nothing to improve the situation and in fact, make you worse. Nothing you learn to reverse back into a creative child who is the true force of an actor's creative impulses. You are expected to create a thing called a "character" on a shaky foundation of "just pretending". No wonder that acting became increasingly stressful and dishonest. There is some odd occasion in some of the highly imaginative and talented actors when miraculously the awful pretense would collapse and the creative acting would effortlessly emerge but these moments were few.
Most of us are unhappy with our acting and my life. It remains devoid of truth and beauty and involves terrible effort. Underneath this fake self-confidence, most of us don't have any clear idea of what we are doing so the work remains hit and miss. We search endlessly in acting classes, auditions, on set performance, alternative lifestyles, travel, observing people and from other actors.

So what should we do? Continue struggling endlessly? Learn all the acting techniques in the world and get disintegrated into nothing and become a confused corpse?
Then hopefully, someday you will find a ray of hope and brightness:

How Can You Learn Meisner's Acting Technique?

Simple And Practical Learning Approach With Co actors or friends at home

Requirement: At least 1 co-actor or a friend

1. The Reality of Doing

Listen and do- here the focus is on really listening and not pretending to listen
Let me explain:
You have a scene where you are supposed to drink tea from an empty cup and every hour as a rehearsal. And this you do every hour repeatedly with your friend before he shoots this scene finally on webcam or mobile. You go on pretending. In the final take when you are drinking out of the cup, you get surprised that it was not empty and there was water in the cup that you forgot your lines! The reality of doing was so foreign to you that it caught you off guard. You had been "so programmed" to "pretend" to drink that had no clue how to really drink out of the cup even though that is what I was doing every hour in rehearsals. Sanford Meisner said that we are supposed to live truthfully under imaginary circumstances and this is done by setting up the foundation of acting which is the reality of doing.

2. Word Repetition Game

A famous the word repetition game. It is the basis of learning the Meisner technique, it was created to get actors out of their heads so they don't think but do. Sandy Meisner wanted to create the simplest task so that actors would not have to think and could focus on doing. With word repetition, you are to repeat accurately everything your partner says.

Repetition develops listening ability
My own learning example
On my first day of coaching session for Meisner's technique, I was told to sit down across from my partner, they would make an observation about me, say it, and I was to repeat EXACTLY what they say the word for word. My partner looked at me and said "You have a pretty smile" and I repeated "You have a pretty smile" we did this for about one minute and I got kudos because I simply knew how to listen! That's it knowing how to listen was getting me one step closer to becoming a better actor.

3. Repeating from your point of view

The next hour I got up again and this time we did the same thing, but now instead of saying it word for word I was to tell it from my point of view. "You have on a green shirt" and I said "I have on a green shirt" We did this several times going back and forth making an observation with each other. The next hour I got up to play the word repetition game again, feeling pretty confident that I did well that past two days I was ready to get to work.
My Partner was told to make an observation of me and he said "You look shit" and without me thinking I said, “I have look shit?" The coach and others broke out in laughter because I was clearly not happy about that comment! The coach stopped us and asked me how I felt about that comment and I said it made me a little angry and that I thought it was an asshole thing to say and he told me "well tell him that"! The pinch

That's when I was told the third most important thing I learned from the repetition game Listening, Point of view, and THE PINCH! That feeling I felt about the comment was the pinch the point in the repetition game that I could now say how I felt about the comment. "You have big hair" "I have big hair?" "You have big hair" "That's an asshole thing to say"...!!! Waiting for the pinch is confusing because it happens at different times for people.
The most important thing I learned is, no matter how long you do repetition waits for the pinch! Most people don't wait and make a change themselves and by doing that they are not reacting truthfully. I would do repetition sometimes for minutes until the change naturally happened. You know the feeling and by not waiting for the pinch you are doing yourself an in-service because you are not acting truthfully. I don't care if you have to do repetition for hours WAIT for the pinch, let the change come naturally! Now, of course, it doesn't take that long, but you get my point. The actors who did the best in the class knew this was a key rule in mastering the Meisner Technique.

The word repetition game is the foundation of the Meisner technique. It is so simple because you don't have to think you just have to listen and do. The actors who did not listen to their partners were the ones who made the change themselves in order to make something happen. If they just simply listened to their partner the change will naturally come. Sanford Meisner said don't create change wait for a pinch, it's about your instinct. One of the most beneficial things I learned was to NOT BE POLITE! Being polite will get you nowhere with the Meisner Technique because it is expressing how you really feel.

4. Practice and Practice!

My rule of thumb is practice three times a day if you can. Always practice at least once,  especially in the beginning of your training. Make repetition second nature to you; get it so ingrained in you that you don't think you just do. I use to practice three times daily it was hard, but if you want to be the best you have to work for the best. Actors have to train just like any other profession.

5. Imagine a scene as a reality

Replace feeling emotions of a character with your own life experiences, if have one similar. If no then
Consider "IF". For example, if I'm a Police Officer, If I'm in an extreme cold or at the blistering hot desert, a thief, murderer, taxi driver, judge and so on-How will I react to a situation in a scene?
The best is to take any story or a script and improvise (read relevant posts from this blog on improvisation)

Simple explanation of the acting technique-Practical Aesthetics

Who-You-Truly-Are

This technique is focalized in two parts

A. Act Before You Think and Think Before You Act. Script Analysis and Performance Technique classes focus on analyzing a script by understanding the story and given circumstances and then going through the process of choosing an action and making specific choices that will create a character.
B. Actors learn to focus on what is actually happening in the scene and focus on creating and pursuing of an action.

Bollywood Films And TV serials

My 2 lines to aspiring actors and even long-time strugglers
Acting can be taught, and if taught, then learned and then anyone could learn to act and act well. To be an actor, does not require the mysterious thing called talent, or the ability to 'become' the character and in my strong opinion, none of these things are within our control.

The Practical Approach

Practical Aesthetics is a practical approach to acting, developed by the director and playwright David Mamet and actor William H Macy. It was developed as a better option to the confusing, mostly impractical acting approaches, maybe casually mentioned and perhaps briefly explained by acting schools in actor training.
It's simplified works from the acting theories and works of legendary Stanislavsky, the works of Sanford Meisner, Joseph Campbell, Aristotle, Carl Jung and philosophy of others.

Its principle is simple and effective and is an essential tool for anyone who feels they have never had a truly reliable and systematic technique from which to approach any and every script.  Too many systems and teachers ask you to ‘have a technique’ without ever giving you a basic foundation on which to develop your own personal approach easily suited. This is not another 12-20 step system that tends to confuse you further.  This is a simple 4 steps technique that will do the only thing an acting technique should do, set you free!

This technique is focused in two parts

  • Act Before You Think and Think Before You Act. Script Analysis and Performance Technique classes focus on analyzing a script by understanding the story and given circumstances and then going through the process of choosing an action and making specific choices that will create a character.
  •  Actors learn to focus on what is literally happening in the scene and focus on the pursuit of an action. Developed by David Mamet and William H. Macy, script analysis explores what the character is “actually doing,” what the character “wants,” and what is playable “action”.

Why it's easy, practical and most relevant for all types of actors? Talent, skills, body, figure not a learning and an essential requirement to become an actor

The technique focuses and comes straight on

A.The useful and practical- "The Script Analysis And Creating a Character"
B. Simple storytelling rather than going round about on different techniques and their complexities,

The Script

1) The essential and most basic description of what is taking place in a scene.
2) The "Want": What does one character ultimately want the other character to say or do.
3) The "Essential Action": The relevant description of what the actor wants within the scene. It is essential to understand that what the character is doing and what the actor objective to do are separate.
4) The "As If": For example if I'm so and so (the character's role in the script or scene), what will I do?
This relates the "essential action" to the actor's own life.

"Essential Action"means? Example – To get back what is rightfully mine. "As If" – My brother has fraudulently transferred the property to his name and trying to throw me out. I need to retrieve it because it is mine.
This step of "As if"is from the memories of his/her life, a spark to involve the actor in the scene. It helps the actor escape the fiction, find the truth, and apply it

Script Analysis

Actors read a script for action to be taken through lines. What obstacles are presented to the character and what actions do they take in order to overcome those obstacles?

Steps

What the character in the story is actually doing.  provides a solid foundation, a sheet anchor for the scene, and reminds the actor of what the audience sees on the simplest level. An example: A married couple are talking about the husband's problems at work.

The next step is to express the character's want for that scene. Helps an actor to know the difference and division between him/her as an actor and character. It is expressed as what my character wants the other character to do further. As in example given above, the character may want her husband who is being bullied at work to be a strong man.
Lastly, the actor seeks an essential action that requires meeting the character's goal in that scene alone. This is expressed in the form of 'to get something from someone'. An example for our married couple, to get someone to stand up for themselves, to get a loved one to take chance.

The choice of actions can be tested against the checklist of basic six criteria. These are

1) It must be in line with the story writer's objectives and intentions
2) It must NOT be like a short journey or just a job
3) It must have a climax (a cap)
4) It must be specific
5) It must be physically capable of being done
6) It must fun
If the action changes, a new beat begins and a new analysis is performed.
(Beat: A beat is the timing and movement in a scene, a situation or due to in a character's objective, attitudes and desired emotional and physical responses. If action has to change (in the context of a scene or script), it usually represents a pause in dialogue, speech, voice, volume, speed etc)

Additionally, Practical Aesthetics employs techniques for getting the actor out of their own head and set mind. This is done by repetition exercise  based on and created by Sanford Meisner

Conclusion

The technique is simple. Like other forms of actor training, it is rigorous; it requires the development of skills, the adjustment of poor habits of an actor and the ability to create interest, truthfulness and an exciting emotional involvement to the role in the scene or moment before viewers in a film or an audience in a  stage play.
But Practical Aesthetics is NOT complicated; the technique is quick to learn (and like all things worthy of our time difficult to master).
However, in India, though schools and individuals may claim, you must learn from an expert and 'one on one' acting coach

You Ass! Kill Long Queue Of Actors And Get Selected in Audition

Is Hon. Donald Trump An Excellent And An Intelligent Actor As Well?
BEATING STRONG COMPETITION!
Is Hon. President Donald Trump An Excellent And An Intelligent Actor As Well?

I'm a trained struggling actor for the last 4 years but not getting good roles. Only as an extra like driver, doorman, a villain's assist etc. I usually rejected in auditions for good TV serial or a film. Help me. What's the solution? I don't want to quit~Kartik Gaikwad

I have lost lots of money in training with a renowned acting institute, registering with coordinators and by false promises by fraud casting directors in Old Mahda, Andheri West, portfolio etc. I don't succeed in auditions. Become nervous. What can I do?~Madhulata Arora

I'm failing and frustrated. Have no choice but to quit. What face I have to go back to my hometown in Haryana. Please help.~Peter D'souza

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Solution

There could be many reasons for a  failure like 1. Poor or no professional training by a good school or an acting coach 2. Wrong selection of auditions ( You don't match with the character) 3. Poor health and figure 4. Bad Hindi 5. Forgetting lines 6. Uncultured and rude approach etc

However, one of the major reason for a failure is anxiety, nervousness and an impending fear of a failure. If I fail?

The only solution to this major reason is "TO RELAX". You must learn how to relax to give a memorable performance whether in an audition or before a shot in a film or for a TV serial
  • Any audition or an actual shoot for a film is always nerve-wracking for actors who truly love the craft and want to make a paying career out of it. Getting nervous is okay to an extent(and even normal), but they should not frighten you! Don't become tense and overwhelmed. Have fun! Easier said than done, I know. But seriously. Before few minutes before the audition, do jumping jacks or even do push-ups before your turn.  Breathe slowly 10 times and say a prayer (or two). I have witnessed many auditions and looked into the waiting room. Seen some good actors doing push-ups before their turn and also some closing their eyes and breathing deeply inside the audition room just a few seconds before starting. And such actors always are relaxed and give usually a good performance
  • I would just say try to prepare yourself before entering the room. When you're in front of the casting directors, its showtime -- not preparation time!.

Beating The Long Queue Of  Actors

Kill Your Tension | 6 Ways to Relax Before an Audition

No matter how many years you’ve been acting, going into an audition is always stressful. You’re worried that you’re going to forget your lines or screw up in some way, or that they just won’t like you.
But if you want to have a good audition, you can’t let those fears and anxieties get to you. The more relaxed and focused you can be heading into an audition, the more likely you’ll be able to really shine.
Here are a few simple tricks for relaxing before an audition:

1. Reach Early

Rule number one for having a relaxing audition: Arrive early. Getting stuck in traffic is only going to make all of your frayed nerves even tenser. Give yourself plenty of time to figure out where you’re going and find a parking space so you can walk in cool and collected.

2. Listen to Music

While you’re in the car or on the L, listen to some relaxing music to get you into that Zen place. Classical music or meditative yoga music are both great for bringing your heart rate down, but if you have other songs that are especially meaningful to you and you like to sing along to, that can work as well. You can even create a special pre-audition playlist of your favorite chill songs that you can listen to every time you have an audition. Another tip is to listen to music that you think will help get you into the headspace that your “character” is in, which can also be fun and turn the audition into an adventure into someone else’s headspace instead of something that you’re dreading.

3. Learn and Practice Meditation Short Technique

The best thing about meditation is it’s free, easy and you can do it anywhere. And it’s a surefire way to center yourself and calm your nerves before you walk into the audition room. If possible, find a quiet spot to sit by yourself before the audition (sitting in your car in the parking lot is always a great option). Set the timer on your phone for 3, 5, or even 10 minutes and close your eyes and try to focus on your breath, letting all of your thoughts go. If you can’t find a quiet spot, you can even put your headphones in and listen to a guided meditation while you sit in the waiting room. Another type of meditation that can be particularly helpful for auditions is to close your eyes and visualize the audition going extremely well. Visualize all parts of the audition, from you walking into the room with confidence, the faces of the auditors brightening upon your entrance, visualize you going through your entire monologue (or audition piece) and see the auditors with you every step of the way. Finally, visualize them being completely moved by you and you walk out of the room with confidence. When you take the time to do this before an audition, it can give you the confidence and relaxation to do your best.

4. Go for a Walk-In Waiting Room Or Outside

If can't go outside the audition room and have reached a bit early (which you must!) connecting with nature, even for just a few minutes, is always a great way of clearing your head and relaxing your nerves. Show up to the theater a little early so you can walk around the block and breathe in the air. Put away your phone and try to clear your head as you walk by focusing on the moment. Listen to the birds chirping, look up at the leaves. Do not go over your lines in your head. Just take the time to be.

5. Take Deep Breaths

Taking a few deep, cleansing breaths is a great way to relax your mind and body in a snap. Start by taking a long, slow in-breath through your nose and counting to three. Exhale slowly as you relax the muscles in your head, face, jaw, and shoulders. Repeat this at least 10 times or until your entire body feels relaxed. Another method is to place your hand on your stomach, with the bottom of your hand on your belly button, and breathe in and out through your nose with the inhales and exhales being the same length. If you are familiar with Nadi Shodhan pranayama (aka Alternate Nostril Breathing), this can be a great way to calm the nervous system and to relieve anxiety. If you aren’t familiar with it, check it out on YouTube here. Anyone can do this exercise whether they are yogis or not!

6. Take Quick Stretch

In auditions, you want your body to be as loose as possible, so it’s important to let go of the tension in your muscles so they don’t interfere with your performance. Loosen up by doing a few quick stretches before you head into the room. You can interlace your fingers and stretch your arms overhead, palms facing upward. Hold the stretch for five full breaths and then drop your arms to the side and roll your head and neck around. Or stand with your feet about hip-width apart and ever-so-slowly fold your torso over your legs, letting your head hang down for five full breaths. You can even shake your head back and forth while you’re folded over to let the tension melt away. This is a spinal roll-down, and to get the full benefits, do this several times in a row, feeling the space created between your vertebrae as you go. If you are familiar with a yoga sequence called the “Sun Salutation” (also known as Surya Namaskara A or B), this can be a great warm-up tool for actors because it revitalizes the body and gets the breath flowing. You don’t have to do a lot of Sun Salutations to notice a difference— just a few of them will get you feeling immediately better and ready to rock your audition!

 Actor Without Acting

How To Master Truthful Acting Without Trying Hard | Under Tension | In A Fear Of Failing Or Rejection

The growth as an actor and growth as a human being are similar(synonymous). The objective should be to
  1. Understanding and learning about "Self", to know your type (Archetype) and about what is acting as a delicate art and actor learning with tools, and with the discipline to grow.
  2. Most importantly, To learn how to develop the limitless human imagination in their task of studying and bringing a script and a character to an interesting life.
  3. This is possible only by becoming neutral, a blank slate/ paper self and by transforming yourself into new life
  4. This can be definitely be done individually at home and be learning to become an actor without so-called "Acting" where an audience finds you as a truthful actor in a given circumstances rather than as a fake or trying hard to play a role.

The Simple 4  Basics Of  Becoming An Actor Are

A.The Self Development

An actor's talent is is him. He should discover, identify and learn how to develop it
To think them and not on anybody's suggestion
Respect their own ideas and values(unique ideas which have been developed over an entire lifetime)
To be an independent and intelligent actor determined to train their mind, bodies, voice, and spirits to achieve their goals (Learn how to set goals)

B. Why Develop The Power Of Imagination?

An actor's imaginations are the most powerful source to create even unimaginative.
To bring a film or a theatre play and characters to life. The actor must be able to create from his own living experiences or by a considerable period of observation of anything he feels by his 5 senses(See, smell, taste, hear and touch). The classical example is of a great actor-Lee J Cobb who acted in an award-winning play "The death of a salesman".

C. The Importance Of "Action"

Drama in a film or at heater depends on 'Doing' rather than 'Saying' or Just 'Feeling'. However, an actor's approach strongly depends on connecting these together by creating a drama(conflict) between him and other characters or with 'given circumstances' in a story. This drama 'should not' be between his own various shades of life(Me and myself)  which may push him into an isolation in the story. These actions especially in for the camera should be subtle, creative and expressive (with eyes and face).

D. Understanding Script And Its Interpretation

  • A story by a writer and recreated as a screenplay for film or a script for a play once submitted is a unique object with its own life and has a tremendous potential to 'impact'on the minds of the audience. To play it is not in words but in you.
  • It's an actor's responsibility  to respect the script with deep and repeated readings,
  • To know where the script is leading the character
  • Understanding  the character's environment(situation in a scene where the actor is performing)
  • Understanding changes in emotions, conflicts and rhythm and tempo

All of the above becomes easier if he has or developed the power of the imagination to incredible heights. Finally, for an actor to achieve a true excellence resolution, determination and sacrifice becomes essential~ Author
