How To Knock Down Scary Competition And Give the Best Performance

Warning

I have noticed in a lot of sessions lately that, when an actor gets nervous, they get paralyzed. This is, of course, a natural reaction for many. If you forget your lines because you feel out of your self (as you have prepared and developed self as an actor), you often shut down and get panicky. The reactions that follow can include tears, perspiration, and shortness of breath. Some actors are so doubtful and stiff that they stop in the middle of their audition apologizing for a wrongly perceived poor performance wasting everyone’s time.
I know. It is a very scary thing to get up in front of people and perform. You become uncertain and left to the mercy and judgment of the audience of selectors. But if this becomes your habit and has not taken any steps to learn and develop the [power of confidence, you may be in the wrong profession. So better be late than never. Learn audition techniques
Some anxiety, however, is normal. If you find it sometimes this "anxiety" gets the best of you, do not.fear. just hit it!

Handling Audition Pressure

Three Steps to Success

1. Breathing

Take a breath! Breathing helps calm your nerves, so take slow, long breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth. This has to be done 10 times. You will be shocked at how many people forget to simply breathe.
Remember the casting director is your friend. They are not in that audition room to look down upon you – Though they don't express, internally they are cheering for you to succeed. They want you to do well. You could be the answer to their casting prayers to get the best actor for the character.

2. Memorization

If you forget a line, DO NOT stop in the middle of a scene. Finish the rest of the scene and then the casting director will tell you if they want you to begin again. You never want to stop because you fumbled and missed a line. The casting director may have loved everything you did until then and could edit around it. Lines do not always have to be perfect either. They are more looking for your performance and essence of the character. You can always do the scene again.

3. Never apologize

Do not apologize for your audition. Ever. You may have done a great job, and the casting director may have loved your work. Even if it felt terrible to you, do not apologize. It makes you appear timid, doubtful and insecure, and it just plain looks bad.

The next time you find yourself sweating under pressure, remember there are simple things to get you through. And if you make a complete fool of yourself, just remember: you are acting! It is meant to be fun and silly.

When You Begin

4 Actions To Initiate Nobody will tell You

1. Surprise the Casting Directors

Create a beat change (rhythm, speed, volume, emotion) after the first line of your script or monologue. Industry people disagree on so many areas of actor's performance, but one thing I’ve never disagreed on is that they want to be surprised. So, let’s imagine the first line of your monologue is something, like, “Muzhe aap ka paisa nehin chahiye, sirf meri baat suniye" (I don’t want your money, I want you to listen to me) and the second line of your script or monologue is, “Aisa lagta hai ki iska koi matlab nehin hai" (it seems like nothing I say means anything to you)
Pause after you’ve delivered your first line. if there is a co-actor, imagine a reaction from your imaginary scene partner upon his/her having heard what you just said. it could be something like shock, denial, resistance—anything from co-actor or you that keeps the conflict ongoing and strong.

2. Show the possibilities of the character

Creating, options and playing different options or changing rhythm, tempo, and emotions in quickly in your short script and lines is really complicated. The role will go to the actor who expands the possibilities of the role with stunning performance and surprising CDs.
This is an important selection criterion when there is line of hundreds for the role

3. Just move on

You have nothing to ever be embarrassed about or ashamed of. Just do your best and forget it. Whether that’s auditioning or in a shoot or getting rejected or being dumped by your artist coordinator or casting director. Screw it and just keep moving forward.

4. Listen carefully  and follow directions given by directors

The biggest mistake I see actors make in the room is simply not following the directions by a casting director in auditions or a film | TV director before or during a scene or a shot. Immediately they label you as dumb or poor in acting and show you exit then and there or never call you in future. Even if it's an improvisation, do not discount your preparation

You Ass! Kill Long Queue Of Actors And Get Selected in Audition

Is Hon. Donald Trump An Excellent And An Intelligent Actor As Well?
BEATING STRONG COMPETITION!
Is Hon. President Donald Trump An Excellent And An Intelligent Actor As Well?

I'm a trained struggling actor for the last 4 years but not getting good roles. Only as an extra like driver, doorman, a villain's assist etc. I usually rejected in auditions for good TV serial or a film. Help me. What's the solution? I don't want to quit~Kartik Gaikwad

I have lost lots of money in training with a renowned acting institute, registering with coordinators and by false promises by fraud casting directors in Old Mahda, Andheri West, portfolio etc. I don't succeed in auditions. Become nervous. What can I do?~Madhulata Arora

I'm failing and frustrated. Have no choice but to quit. What face I have to go back to my hometown in Haryana. Please help.~Peter D'souza

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Solution

There could be many reasons for a  failure like 1. Poor or no professional training by a good school or an acting coach 2. Wrong selection of auditions ( You don't match with the character) 3. Poor health and figure 4. Bad Hindi 5. Forgetting lines 6. Uncultured and rude approach etc

However, one of the major reason for a failure is anxiety, nervousness and an impending fear of a failure. If I fail?

The only solution to this major reason is "TO RELAX". You must learn how to relax to give a memorable performance whether in an audition or before a shot in a film or for a TV serial
  • Any audition or an actual shoot for a film is always nerve-wracking for actors who truly love the craft and want to make a paying career out of it. Getting nervous is okay to an extent(and even normal), but they should not frighten you! Don't become tense and overwhelmed. Have fun! Easier said than done, I know. But seriously. Before few minutes before the audition, do jumping jacks or even do push-ups before your turn.  Breathe slowly 10 times and say a prayer (or two). I have witnessed many auditions and looked into the waiting room. Seen some good actors doing push-ups before their turn and also some closing their eyes and breathing deeply inside the audition room just a few seconds before starting. And such actors always are relaxed and give usually a good performance
  • I would just say try to prepare yourself before entering the room. When you're in front of the casting directors, its showtime -- not preparation time!.

Beating The Long Queue Of  Actors

Kill Your Tension | 6 Ways to Relax Before an Audition

No matter how many years you’ve been acting, going into an audition is always stressful. You’re worried that you’re going to forget your lines or screw up in some way, or that they just won’t like you.
But if you want to have a good audition, you can’t let those fears and anxieties get to you. The more relaxed and focused you can be heading into an audition, the more likely you’ll be able to really shine.
Here are a few simple tricks for relaxing before an audition:

1. Reach Early

Rule number one for having a relaxing audition: Arrive early. Getting stuck in traffic is only going to make all of your frayed nerves even tenser. Give yourself plenty of time to figure out where you’re going and find a parking space so you can walk in cool and collected.

2. Listen to Music

While you’re in the car or on the L, listen to some relaxing music to get you into that Zen place. Classical music or meditative yoga music are both great for bringing your heart rate down, but if you have other songs that are especially meaningful to you and you like to sing along to, that can work as well. You can even create a special pre-audition playlist of your favorite chill songs that you can listen to every time you have an audition. Another tip is to listen to music that you think will help get you into the headspace that your “character” is in, which can also be fun and turn the audition into an adventure into someone else’s headspace instead of something that you’re dreading.

3. Learn and Practice Meditation Short Technique

The best thing about meditation is it’s free, easy and you can do it anywhere. And it’s a surefire way to center yourself and calm your nerves before you walk into the audition room. If possible, find a quiet spot to sit by yourself before the audition (sitting in your car in the parking lot is always a great option). Set the timer on your phone for 3, 5, or even 10 minutes and close your eyes and try to focus on your breath, letting all of your thoughts go. If you can’t find a quiet spot, you can even put your headphones in and listen to a guided meditation while you sit in the waiting room. Another type of meditation that can be particularly helpful for auditions is to close your eyes and visualize the audition going extremely well. Visualize all parts of the audition, from you walking into the room with confidence, the faces of the auditors brightening upon your entrance, visualize you going through your entire monologue (or audition piece) and see the auditors with you every step of the way. Finally, visualize them being completely moved by you and you walk out of the room with confidence. When you take the time to do this before an audition, it can give you the confidence and relaxation to do your best.

4. Go for a Walk-In Waiting Room Or Outside

If can't go outside the audition room and have reached a bit early (which you must!) connecting with nature, even for just a few minutes, is always a great way of clearing your head and relaxing your nerves. Show up to the theater a little early so you can walk around the block and breathe in the air. Put away your phone and try to clear your head as you walk by focusing on the moment. Listen to the birds chirping, look up at the leaves. Do not go over your lines in your head. Just take the time to be.

5. Take Deep Breaths

Taking a few deep, cleansing breaths is a great way to relax your mind and body in a snap. Start by taking a long, slow in-breath through your nose and counting to three. Exhale slowly as you relax the muscles in your head, face, jaw, and shoulders. Repeat this at least 10 times or until your entire body feels relaxed. Another method is to place your hand on your stomach, with the bottom of your hand on your belly button, and breathe in and out through your nose with the inhales and exhales being the same length. If you are familiar with Nadi Shodhan pranayama (aka Alternate Nostril Breathing), this can be a great way to calm the nervous system and to relieve anxiety. If you aren’t familiar with it, check it out on YouTube here. Anyone can do this exercise whether they are yogis or not!

6. Take Quick Stretch

In auditions, you want your body to be as loose as possible, so it’s important to let go of the tension in your muscles so they don’t interfere with your performance. Loosen up by doing a few quick stretches before you head into the room. You can interlace your fingers and stretch your arms overhead, palms facing upward. Hold the stretch for five full breaths and then drop your arms to the side and roll your head and neck around. Or stand with your feet about hip-width apart and ever-so-slowly fold your torso over your legs, letting your head hang down for five full breaths. You can even shake your head back and forth while you’re folded over to let the tension melt away. This is a spinal roll-down, and to get the full benefits, do this several times in a row, feeling the space created between your vertebrae as you go. If you are familiar with a yoga sequence called the “Sun Salutation” (also known as Surya Namaskara A or B), this can be a great warm-up tool for actors because it revitalizes the body and gets the breath flowing. You don’t have to do a lot of Sun Salutations to notice a difference— just a few of them will get you feeling immediately better and ready to rock your audition!

Want To Join Big List Of Losers? Don't Get Monologue | 14 Tips

14 tips for preparing monolog for films/TV/ theater

I don't know how to prepare a monolog for auditions and failing. Can you help?

Is a bad monolog or no monolog the reason of rejections in auditions?

How important is for an actor to prepare a monolog?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How to select a monolog?
What monolog should I use for my audition?
How to prepare Hindi monolog?
How long should be a monolog?
What precautions should I take for preparing monolog?

What Is a Monologue?

If you have a friend or relative who likes to hear himself talk, you already know what a monologue is.  It is an uninterrupted, one-sided conversation in which a person — a college professor, your drunk friend at a wedding anniversary party— addresses a specific audience. Dating back to ancient Greek drama, where they played an essential role, monologues remain the main feature of plays and films.
Monologues provide character development, give an explanation, or identify key themes.
Nowadays it's a trend with casting directors to ask an actor appearing for audition to give a monolog

Follow these winning tips when choosing one

Finding good audition material seems to be a pain in the ass for many actors. I began to fully appreciate how actors kill selection chances. Many actors simply choose bad audition monologs for themselves. The reality is, if you are going to audition for films and TV (also especially for theater), monologs are going to be required of you fairly regularly. You can help yourself immensely if you follow some simple tips.

1. Know your "type" and be realistic about it.

A good way of discovering this to ask other actor friends, your acting coach and people in the industry. If you choose a piece that is something you’d "LIKE to do" as opposed to something that truly suits you, you are unlikely to stand out among the competition- there will be plenty of others who are type same casting type, better looking and more experienced or better prepared for the same audition

2. Know your age range

Again, be realistic about this and ask friends, your acting coach or people in the industry for honest opinions about your screen age then stick to that age range. For example, if your screen age is 23 to 30 and if you prepare or select a monolog spoken by 60 years old man, well then you know it would be absolutely out of the place and the casting directors would notice instantly.

3. Enter the room with confidence

If hands are offered, shake them. Look the auditors in the eyes during introductions i. Introduce yourself and let them know what piece you are doing and who the source/s. Remember to smile and show off your confidence.

4. Short And Sweet

A monolog that’s between 1 minute to 2 minutes is great. More than that is beginning to push it too much. A monolog audition should work to spark the auditor’s imagination, not be an attempt to cram everything you can do with a one piece of text.

5. Imagine

Simply put, your monolog should express as if you are talking something to your scene partner whether partner present to absent. In this way, every monolog is actually a dialogue, a give and take between you and a silent, invisible scene partner.

6. Don't tell just a story

This is related to #2. So often actors create monologs which simply tell a story or reflect on a memory. These pieces become inactive 99% of the time and highlight the matter rather than you.

7. Avoid pieces that are full of violence, sex or offensive language

Remember that an audition is, after all, a job interview. Often the casting director doesn't know anything about you apart from what we see in the audition. "A lot of offensive language or pieces that contain descriptions of graphic violent or sexual acts are just in bad taste at an audition

8. Entertain auditioners

No one in the industry wants to watch an actor working really hard to impress them with their "acting" especially if the piece is boring or mediocre. Choose a monolog you love doing so we will love watching you.

9. Great Monologs often start out as dialogue

When you are looking for pieces, don’t just assume that a perfectly crafted minute-long monolog right there is going to jump out at you. Some of the best monologs I have are ones that I’ve pieced together from one story or character’s dialogue in a scene. Perhaps, starting with a question, demanding something from an invisible person or asking an opinion and then proceeding

10.  Avoid the monologs that are common and overdone

Many actors make a mistake of preparing a monolog from Bollywood classic films and TV serials like from Sholay, Pyaasa, Guide, Dil To Pagal Hai and so on whether or not it suits them or not. Most casting directors are tired of listening to these pieces repeatedly and they may suddenly lose interest in you. So, be careful.

11. Reflect your good taste

This is to say that choosing monolog for its giving "shock" value or for example too dramatic irritability, bursts of anger or sexually abuse can backfire if you bring it into an audition room. Content matters of course, but not everyone loves hearing 20 bombs in 60 seconds. Not everyone loves hearing pieces about being sexually abused. Not everyone loves watching an actor rage at the top of their lungs.Take the right risks, not the cheap ones.

12. Play to your strengths

It’s great to experiment and try a wide range of monologs to practice but when it comes to what you choose to use for auditions, play to your strengths and show yourself being the best that you can be.
Choose a monolog with shifts in emotion
I'm sure you must have been knowing how to portray at least 9 types of emotions and different attitudes (In acting class or by your acting coach). The most interesting monologs to watch are the ones with changes in emotion, rhythm, and tempo. This will make it more compelling to watch and will show more of what you are capable of.

13. Don’t be a magician and hide behind tricks

Hands down the biggest mistake I see in the audition room is actors hiding behind the tricks and gimmicks of their pieces. Being showy is the easiest choice and almost always the wrong one. Tossing props, exaggerated gestures, picking up things from the casting director's table are some of the examples.

14. Do not change your accent. Stick to your own accent

You’ve been invited to the audition because of who you are, and if you deliver your monolog in a different accent, you won’t be giving them what they wanted when they called you in- which is you! The exception to this, of course, is if you have been asked to do a different accent, and even then only go for it if you are flawless.

Here is one of the best monolog, I like from Bollywood movie "Khakee"

Jim Carrey the world's greatest comedian getting repeated rejections before success

Why so many actors including me rejected in auditions?
I' quitting. Getting repeated rejections in auditions. Any solution?
My school never taught me how to avoid repeated audition failure and get a role. Can You help?
How to become film and TV serial actor by being selected in auditions?

Answering These 7 simple questions and preparing well can make you succeed in auditions

The other side is that an actor who puts in the time and energy will definitely have a greater understanding of their character and their personal acting technique.
Take them, learn them, and think about them. That is why Stanislavski asked them.

  • There are so many different acting techniques that finding a process that works for you can be confusing and difficult. Ironically, most acting books and teachers use similar principles based on Stanislavski's system. This is because Constantin Stanislavski is considered, even today as 'The father of modern acting' and every acting technique created in the current era continues to get influenced by 'Father Stan.'
  • For young actors, I'm giving an understanding of Stanislavski’s 7 questions which will be an invaluable foundation upon which to build a 'character' the actor intends to play.

As A Character Ask

Who am I?

Start with the basics and then fill in the gaps with your imagination. Pick apart the script to find out what type of person your character is; what they look like, what they believe, how others describe them and so on. Think about your character’s past and the significant events/people that influenced them and made them who they are in the script.

Where am I?

The script will usually tell you where you are but the important thing for an actor is to consider how the character feels about the place they are in. Characters act differently in public than they do in private. People move differently when they are cold vs. when they are too hot. The space your character occupies can determine how they behave during a scene.

What time is it?

Year, season, month, day, and time of day should all be described. Then, think about how the specific time of the play changes the character’s action. If it’s night, looks or says in the upper regions of Himachal Pradesh in extreme winter, physical reactions and dialog delivery may change.

What do I want?

This is a character’s primary motivation for everything they do in a scene. All actions should be executed with the goal of getting what you want from the other characters in the scene. This is also called a character’s objective.

Why do I want it?

There must be a driving force behind your objectives on stage and on film screen and that is your justification. We all had reasons for doing what we do and characters are no different. Give your character a convincing reason for acting and you automatically generate high stakes which lead to tension.

How will I get what I want?

Imagine. Use your dialogue, movements, and gestures to try to influence the other characters to give you what you want i.e. accomplish your objective. This is also called a character’s tactic. If one tactic fails, try a new one and see if that works.

What must I overcome to get what I want?

There may be always something in the script stopping characters from achieving their objective so as to create a drama. Usually, there is someone or something in the outside world impeding a character’s advancement and also some internal conflict with which they struggle. Find what it/they are and fight against them with the scene. This is also called a character’s obstacle.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ambitious people are always striving for success and acting is no different. The question of how to be a successful actor has bothered thousands of actors and experts.
There’s good news, and then there’s bad news.

The good news is that there are 2 guaranteed formulas on how to win auditions and be a successful actor.

The bad news, however, is that these 2 formulas are not easy to crack. But if you stick with it, follow the rules, play the game, and give it all you’ve got, you might be a star in Bollywood or Hollywood or in TV.

Controlling  And Winning Your Auditions and Acting Career

Step 1.

Get selected in auditions

Caution!
Don't go for every audition. Check if it suits you before you apply and go for audition

Prescription 1

Your Type = age range + jobs + attitude

Explanation

  • Your type

We are all born a certain way, with a certain “look” and unless we want to commit to drastic plastic surgery, then we will be cast as specific roles in our acting careers. It’s up to actors to be smart enough to identify that look, harness it, and use it to our advantage. Are you look and suitable for:

Examples

  • Leading man/woman
  • 2nd man/woman
  • College student
  • Teacher, professor or principal
  • Village farmer
  • Good or a bad friend
  • Common street man/woman
  • Shopkeeper
  • Taxi driver
  • Businessman
  • Executive
  • Priest / Pujari
  • Crooked and sly
  • Comedian
  • Look belonging to a particular ethnicity like South Indian, North East etc
  • Short, Tall, Fat, Sickly
  • With a particular voice, accent and body language

How to conclude your 'Type'

  • Take a good hard look in the mirror. Pay attention to your face, your weight, your ethnicity, and your personality. Do you have a receding hairline? Do you have a thick accent? Listen to your voice. Do you sound smart and articulate when you talk, or do you sound uneducated? Be. Honest
  •  Finally, ask your close friends, an acting coach, or anyone who will be honest with you. Your good friends will be honest with you.

  • Age range

For example, you look between 22-32. This is called as screen age range

  • Jobs

Audition requirements for a role eg. college student, hot, sexy, taxi driver, shopkeeper, professor, middle-aged father, character actor, businessman etc

  • Attitude

As an individual are you a positive, negative, shy, aggressive, introvert, smiling, argumentative, peaceful, brave etc?

Step 2.

How To Become A Successful Actor?

Prescription 2

(P + HW + T) × L = S

Explanation

What is this, you ask? This is your equation of success. This is your formula towards succeeding in acting business. It’s

P: Perseverance
HW: Hard Work
T: Talent;
Then all of the above multiplied by
X: Multiply by luck
Equals to
Thumbs up
Success!

4.  Dismissing your mistakes

High Self Confidence

1.  Doing what you believe is right. Not bothered what others think
2.  Willing to take risks
3.  Admitting your mistakes and learning from them

  • Only think of positives.

3. Always think of good things

  • Ask others what you can do for them. Don't expect too much and always from others.
  • Join Yoga, Gym, Dancing and music classes. These activities will help you to develop a positive and cheerful mind apart from adding in your acting craft.
  • Attend shows, theater, music shows and events.

4. Do what interests you

  • Identify your successes since childhood, even small ones. Recollect them offer and smile.
  • Don't worry about the outcome of your efforts: For example, go for an audition as an event to enjoy and as a part of your training. Do your best, come out and celebrate your effort with a cup of tea or a drink either with your friends or alone, thinking good and smiling. In another word- CELEBRATE every small effort, not only an achievement!

5. Be aggressive

  • Develop a habit of "Barging in" (Pushing in)
  • Meet strangers; Talk and interact with everybody. However, while talking, always talk what others may like;
  • Tell a person without hesitation if he/she offends or negates you. Be frank. Don't worry about the outcome!

6. STOP your wandering

By instructing your mind by saying "stop" or count backward from 10 to 1. Focus and concentrate

7. Analyze your day

Start writing down a day's activities before you go to bed. What you have achieved and what you couldn't.

8. Smile and smile

Develop a habit of "Smiling" most of the time. Try this forcibly and consequently, it will become your habit.

9. Talk loudly

The world doesn't accept soft spoken people. They are considered as "Timid"

10. Must consider and do

  • Make decisions every day and follow irrespective of consequences.
  • Always think of bright future ahead you
  • Learn to accept "You are wrong"
  • Mind your body language. To be confident walk and talk confidently even if you are shitting in your pants! After all, you are an actor. Just fake it!
  • Don't compare yourself with others

11. Try new things

  • Dresses, games, friends, hobbies, exotic foods, traveling, places, camping, hiking, birding, nature etc.
  • Analyze good and successful people
  • Learn to say "NO". Don't compromise with "YES"

Positive Mental Food To Be A Successful Actor And Happy In Life

  • Just as your body is healthy to the degree to which you eat healthy, nutritious foods, your mind is healthy to the degree to which you feed it with “mental protein” rather than “mental candy.”
  • Read books, magazines, and articles that are educational, inspirational, or motivational. Feed your mind with information and ideas that are uplifting and that make you feel happy and more confident about yourself and your world.
  • Listen to positive, constructive CDs and audio programs on your MP3 player, Mobile or iPod. Feed your mind continually with positive messages that help you think and act better and make you more capable and competent in your field.
  • Watch positive and educational DVDs, educational television programs, online courses, and other uplifting material that increases your knowledge and makes you feel good about yourself and your life.

You ask your partner to marry you. She declines. A different you are triggered.
A stranger asks you for directions. A different you are triggered.

4.  “Character” in a screen play, then, isn’t what we think it is or, rather, what we want it to be".

5. It isn’t a stable, easily identifiable set of closely related traits, and it only seems that way because of a flaw in the way our brains are organized. A character is more like a bundle of habits and tendencies and interests, on the circumstance in story and situation. The reason that most of us seem to have a consistent character is that most of us are really good at controlling and changing our environment. If not then we may leave and go to other”
6. So just like in life, circumstances and context in a story trigger the many-sided characters out of us. Sometimes we like them, sometimes we don’t. Then why in 90% of actors, the portrayal of a character looks unreal, artificial as if trying desperately hard to be in a character?

7. In my strong opinion as an experienced actor and an acting coach for the many years, if we can learn while creating a character, how to analyze and judge them less, we can reach them easily and more and become everything of a character we want: fearless, vulnerable, expressed, and instant transformative. Just like we aspire to in life.

8. While creating a character in us everything comes from the inside(feeling and accepting) and so we come out so and so. But keep in mind- for sure it's also true, the outside triggers our insides- for example 'using physical gestures similar to a character in a given circumstance in a story for a convincing.

9. This second consideration may help those actors poor in imagination, dreaming, high emotional sensitivity and self-transformation. An inborn Thick Skinned? Personally, I don't think so.

Character Building Is Tailoring | Learn How To Stitch Suit

Feed Shark
Bollywood actors with top Hollwood star Leonardo DiCaprio
Acting is like stitching a suit | Bollywood actors with top Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio in suits

Acting is like tailoring a suit
An actor must consider 'Acting' as stitching character's suit

Here is an example of an imaginary situation to explain a character building

Screen Play (Script)

THE TAILOR

Fade in:

INT. TAILOR'S SHOP-DAY

A character (could be anybody-hero/heroin, villain, doctor, businessman, professor, taxi-driver etc.) walks into a tailor's shop.

Character

Tailor master, stitch a good suit to look impressive and memorable

Actor Tailor

Okay. Tell about about you. I mean your physical, mental and social profile

Character

My objective is to look good and convincing. You create it. He is my story and what have I to do. Read, analyse carefully and create (gives a script to the tailor)

Actor Tailor

Okay. I will do my best

Fade out

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Creating Your Character Is Like Tailoring A Suit

“The first season of a show, the character is written and the actor is kind of putting on a suit. As the show progresses, the actors start to tailor the suits for themselves, and the writers start writing to the actors’ strengths…. If the actor is not helping inform the writers and they’re not able to go, ‘I feel this way about my character,’ the actor is not growing into the part.”

Authenticity In Stitching Suit

Casting directors or film TV directors hate watching people perform and feeling like they’re ‘acting’—acting like they’re frustrated, acting annoyed. Every character expresses their anger or hurt differently. Sometimes actors come in and try to show a universal way that they’re hurt or they’re mad, but it doesn’t necessarily tell a director/viewers what this character does when they get upset.

  • You can give a stunning performance and expect appreciation
  • But it doesn't happen-you don't get selected

You have overlooked

  1. Who decides how a film or a scene will succeed
  2. Who gives a break to you
  3. What they want in a character
  4. How are you meeting those requirements better than hundreds
  5. Who pays you

Caution: Are You The Boss?

You’re running the scene literally. You’re going to say ‘Hey, this is what you’re now going to watch on the screen.’ You have stitched the best suit (character) as per what you think the viewers will love. But it doesn't happen that way. You fail to impress casting directors, The difference is between what you think is good and what is required from a casting director point of view

Actors Must Trust What’s On The Script

As a casting director or as a scene director you want actors to make interesting choices, but you also want them to do what’s in the script- objective, how a script achieves those objectives, beginning-middle, and end, rhythm, and tempo, given situation etc. Have you considered this while stitching the suit?

Explore Deeper And Then Create

You’re obviously finding characters after your vivid power of imagination-a deep psychological analysis and then breaking up of the physical, mental and social profile of the character. Then you try to transform yourself into this newly created life of the character.
Don't go by preaching of an acting school or try to play safe. Feel Insecure. Don't be afraid to go wrong. Be imaginative, wild and vivid. Sure, you will be a wonderful tailor

How To Fix 14 Slip-Ups By Most Actors In Auditions

Screwing up an Audition- Fix it NOW!
Screwing up an Audition- Fix it NOW!

This Is My Pick Which May Screw Up Your Chances in Auditions

  • Don't do anything that isn't about the audition.
  • To arrive at an audition without thoroughly preparing the requested material.
  • Being late is another common mistake
  • Shaking hands: Don’t do it unless they approach you and offer their hand
  • Apologizing before or after your audition.

Whether you are attending auditions, barging in their offices or visiting production houses, you meet casting directors or directors or producers or may be their clients who are sitting with them. They expect a certain behavior and etiquette from you, which sadly they don't get from some of you.

So here is 14 Screw Ups and how to correct them

1. Behavior

Don't embarrass them in front of their producers / clients (occasionally they be present in an audition or a meeting) or other direction or production colleagues when you show up and still do not have  a perfect preparation or the material memorized.

2. Clothes On And The Perfume Off

Keep your clothes on and the perfume off. If the role calls for exhibiting six packs or a nude scene, it will be done on set. Not in their office or in an audition room.

3. Don't Loiter

When your audition is over, please leave. They are not best friends and I don't want you hanging out in the waiting room or even chatting with their juniors or receptionists if you are calling them in their offices.

 4. Meet Them Through The Proper Channels

If you have registered with coordinators or with an agent, they will submit. I suggest not to phone or email (only once) or tweet repeatedly.

5. No Unnecessary Questions

Don't question whether you are right for a project. If they call you after scrutinizing your portfolio and resume, they might have discussed you with other concerned people and think that you have a chance at the role. They won't call you in to waste your time or theirs. Go and be prepared.

6. Irrespective Of Consequences "Smile"

Be respectful. Even if you are having a bad day, put a smile on your face and be pleasant to them.
7. Thank them irrespective of an outcome. They appreciate that

7. Be Professional

Be professional. If you are called and likely to be out of town, inform them with regret while  still thanking them for the invitation

8.  Be Truthful In Replies

Don't say that you can do something you can't. For example, don't say Yes to 5 nights continuous shoot if can't. Or nude scenes or horse riding  or bike stunts if you can't

9. Don't Mention Age

Never tell anyone your age if you're an adult . If you're an adult, it only matters how old you play in the room or on camera.  You could look far younger than your years or you could look far older than your years. At the most, you can mention only in resume “Screen look range”

10. Strictly Avoid comments, criticism, change in script

Never comment, criticize or change the script or your lines in front of the writer or director or producer of the project or tell anybody else in their office, audition waiting room or while auditioning. However, you are free to have your choices in performance options.

11.  Questions

Ask questions about the material if you are unsure about something. Only ask questions if you need clarity.

12. Request Should Be Appropriate

If you need more time with the material, it's OK to ask for a re-schedule or for another  opportunity if it's a rush call. Better to do your best and be prepared than to go in and try to waste their time and your chances.

13. Be Flexible

Be flexible and be prepared for a change in your lines or performance.

14.  Learn Relaxation Techniques

Invest in researching relaxation techniques so that you can overcome any nervousness previous to your entering the meeting or audition room.

7 Steps How To Give Stunning Introduction For Audition

How To Give Best Introduction For Auditions Or In Video Introduction?
On Camera introduction and video introduction techniques

Why Am I Not selected In Auditions?
How To Give Best Introduction For Auditions Or In Video Introduction?

Auditions

This applies to both-

  • Physically on camera in front of auditions
  • Prepared Video introduction submitted to casting directors or production dept.

Your introduction (slate, as it 's called) tells those viewing your audition if you can be selected and are “castable."

Video Introduction

Due to the pressure of time and the rents of hiring a place for auditions is expensive hence, much of that decision to watch your video or even physically in an audition is based on whether your physicality fits their requirements and whether the viewing public will convincingly identify you with the character.

In Audition

While in a live audition, how you introduce self (slate), your presence, and how you connect to the camera is really important. Though your physical appearance to the character is considered, your overall introduction is totally up to you and can be your strong asset for selection if done well.

  • Speaking out just your name seems so simple, which is why many give it no real thought. This can be a mistake because the intro (slate) provides important information about who you are. It depicts confidence or lack of showing your personality, and so much more.

From years of my own experience as an actor and teaching, I have seen most of the ways that actors make bad first impressions with their introduction.

7 reasons

How actors create a bad impression

  1. When actors desperately try to fake an impression, overdramatize, and appear that they are working too hard to be likable, it may create an impression of insincerity, insecurity, or poor training.
  2. If actors appear moody, sullen, uptight, or arrogant, it gives an impression that actor could have emotional issues.
  3. If they are slick or monotone, they appear unbelievable or unlikeable.
  4. If they don't hold eye contact with the camera, they seem afraid, shifty, or inexperienced.
  5. If actors speak too fast or too soft, it makes them appear nervous, shy or inhibited.
  6. If they speak too slow, it often is taken as patronizing like a saint or a priest.
  7. if they speak too loud, it suggests they have done more theater than film work or that they are trying to reach the camera with their voice.

The above may happen as an unconscious act, habit, or a consequence of their anxiety and tension, which make them look 'one of those hundreds' and inexperienced.

How To Give Best Introduction (Video as well)

  1. I suggest that you introduce (slate) as if it were an introduction to someone, not as a presentation, announcement, or to impress. When auditioning, I suggest that you honestly introduce yourself to someone in the room (usually the person running the session) while looking into the camera lens.
  2. You should be positive and enjoy introducing yourself.
  3. Smile, if it feels right, but if you smile just to smile, it will look fake and insincere. Smile because you are confident and having fun, then it will be relaxed or engaging.
  4. Be spontaneous! Each time you say your name it should be just a little different. If there isn’t some difference each time, then it may convey you have probably memorized  and it's just a “line reading.”
  5. Add a “Hi, I’m" or a “Hello, my name is” and then your name. This will make it friendly and less like you are reporting for military duty.
  6. When nervous, laugh a little bit (to relax) before you start. It helps to release the nervousness and quickly shifts you into a positive energy. If you have been told by auditioners that you are "not really you" in your slate, then you should give it some attention.
  7. There is no second chance to make a first impression. This is especially true for commercial ad auditions.

Note: Sometimes actors want to know if they should slate in character.  I suggest if you are unsure then ask the AD or audition session in-charge

15 Types Of Laugh For Camera You Must Learn | How To

How to laugh for camera and types
Learn The famous laughter style of Navjot Sidhu

If you are acting for the camera, there's good news and bad news.

The good news: you can create many different takes and an editor/director can choose the one that works best.
The bad news: film crews are expensive, and time equals money. The director will grow impatient if you can't come up with a right realistic la. Depending on the scene and your fellow actors, off camera interaction, can often evoke genuine laughter. Also, surprise moments between actors can work wonders -- as long as the director appreciates!

Studying Laughter

  • The sounds of laughter are similar around the world. Most laughter consists of H-sounds: Ha, ho, hee. Other bursts of laughter might contain vowel sounds.
  • In fact, there's an entire field of science dedicated to the study of laughter. It's called gelotology
  • Learning about the mental and physical aspects of laughter can help actors become more adept at producing laughs on cue.

Facts On Laughter

  1. Females laugh more often than men.
  2. Men are more likely to attempt to make others laugh.
  3. Speakers (joke tellers) laugh almost 50% more than their audience.
  4. Laughter often occurs at the end of a sentence.
  5. We laugh more when in the company of others than when we are alone.

What can motivate your character's Laughter?

If you can laugh spontaneously and sound believable, you're ready for your audition.
If the laugh sounded forced it might be because you have no idea why your character is laughing. The more you emotionally "Feel" with your character, the more you can feel like her and laugh like her.

How To Laugh

For some actors laughing on *cue can be just as difficult a task as to cry on *cue. Here are a few tips on how to laugh effectively:

  • First and foremost, keep your attention on the scene and on your partner. If you are truly engrossed in the moment of the scene, the laugh will come organically.
  • Think of the kind of laugh required for the moment. What size or type of laugh is an appropriate reaction to the situation? Sometimes a little chuckle is far more effective than a belly laugh. Although a seemingly inappropriate laugh may work as well, particularly if you are acting in a comedy.
  • Be aware of the what the mood of the scene is and decide how your character would honestly react. After that, forget about it. Let the moment carry you through.

When To Stop Laughing

  • You cannot continue laughing until eternity unless of course, your character is a maniac. This would depend on the character you are playing. If the role is comedic then an abrupt end and remaining still may work.
  • For example, you are playing a character of a subordinate and your boss slips while sitting or mispronounced a word or drops something, which has evoked a laughter in you (natural). You have to stop suddenly and froze realizing that your laughter may be insulting to your boss.
  • In a second situation, you are sitting with friends and enjoying jokes. Here laughing belly out may be okay

Watch How Others Laugh

As an actor, you are probably a people watcher already, and if you haven't taken up the pastime of carefully watching others, it's time to begin. Spend the next five days observing different categories of people how others laugh.

  • Do they giggle in a high pitched spurt?
  • Do they do a courtesy laugh just to please others?
  • Are they intoxicated?
  • Maniacal? Childish?
  • Are they laughing sarcastically? Uncontrollably?
  • Are they trying (but failing) to hold it in?
  • Take notes if you can.
Here are some of the contemporary laughing style for actors to learn. Few of them are never taught in any acting school and are great to surprise a casting director or a Bollywood director. You can find these laughs in the live video attached below:

Learn These 15 Types Of Laugh

  1. Wheezer Laugh:  The wheezer laugh is the high-pitched whining laugh that sounds like an exploding steam engine.  The person affected tends to have trouble breathing for minutes.  this type of laugh is usually sparked by an unexpected occurrence, like a nun swearing or me telling a funny joke that everyone gets.
  2. Chuckle laugh:  The chuckle is the I-really-don't-want-to-laugh-but-think-that-it-is-funny laugh.  Usually, this laugh occurs when someone (like a teacher) in authority finds an underling's statement and/or body reaction to being funny, but also thinks that it would be inappropriate to laugh.  An example would be the time a guy farted in class and a girl asked what funny thing did he say when everyone started to giggle.  Needless to say, it was a struggle not to laugh my ass (or other bodily appendages) off.
  3. Mime laugh:  This is the totally silent laugh that only dogs can hear.  the person appears to be laughing heartily, but no sound is heard.
  4. Machine gun laughs: when someone laughs like a machine gun. A laugh that is very choppy- for example, the boy had a machine gun laugh. it sounded like a machine gun.
  5. Cackle laugh: To laugh or talk in a shrill manner. For example a witch laughter
  6. Tee-Hee laugh: a giggle, a cute laugh as in case of a school girl
  7. Repeater laugh: when one laughs in the same way as the other
  8. High Society laugh: A high profile lady or gentleman laughings in a subdued manner, may be with no or small sound
  9. Lost control or crazy laugh: Laughing wild or in a bizarre way without exercising any control
  10. No smile laugh: Laughing within, may be producing sound but without smile
  11. All nostrils laugh: Laughing with expanded nostrils
  12. Contagious laugh: A kind of laugh which makes others laugh. You continue to laugh and people around you continue to laugh hearing your laugh (http://youtu.be/W59znLRtokk)
  13. Doesn't get it laugh: A person laughs though he/she doesn't understand what is the issue
  14. Thrower laugh: As a response, a person laughs throwing out whatever the person is drinking
  15. Dancer Laugh: Laughing making dancing poses

*cue: a thing said or done that serves as a signal to an actor or other performers to enter or to begin their speech or performance.

5 Audition Success Steps To Let Your Audition Go With Bang

5 simple steps to win auditions

Not Winning Auditions? Here Are 5 Great Audition Steps To Grab Film/TV Roles

1 – Learn Your Lines

You’ll be asked to perform a piece from the script – so make sure you know it and remember if possible, word by word. In a regular audition, you’ll get a minus mark if you’re less than word perfect. So I expect the same from you here, at the start of your career.

2 – Make Decisions How To Play The Character

Think long and hard, and decide what’s really going on in your character’s world (The one you are going to portray). What’s that about the character not mentioned in the script? Don’t just speak your lines like hundreds of others. Don't be uncertain. Decide.

3 – Don't Hesitate To Take Risks

You’ll get nowhere by playing it safe. So listen to that inside voice of yours, telling you to "go out and don't worry". Do something different, to bring out hidden qualities in your character. Free and open up...

4 – Make The Best Use Of Space Allowed In Front Of Camera Or The Room

If there is a scene, may be your co-actor in the audition room, think how would your character move, do things and fill the space? For example, would the character pick things up? Play with objects? Use the doors and windows? Fiddle with light switches? Involve the furniture?

5 – Be On Time

The casting people are looking at your attitude just as much as your talent. So even if there’s valid reason, a train or bus strike and the city grinds to a halt, they want to see you there on time. That shows how you are committed.

Okay – so follow these steps

Start with a bang

And your audition should go with BANG!
